I’m currently in Chicago attending one of Pearson’s national meetings. I was fortunate enough to attend a talk Carolyn Kepcher gave yesterday. Carolyn spoke about work-life “balance,” women in business and, of course, what it was like to work for Donald Trump & be on The Apprentice. After the session I asked her what her advice is for me, as a twenty-something woman working for a huge company but also interacting with many companies on a daily basis. Her advice to me? Be confident. It’s important to remember that you will not always have the answers but that you have the resources to get them. If you believe in yourself, your product and your company it’s okay to be confident. Confidence, Carolyn joked, is not interchangeable with cockiness.
This got me thinking. As a twenty-something woman in Corporate America what can I do to succeed? Here I am asking for advice when I should be critically thinking! Discrimination goes hand-in-hand with assumptions. Working with RED model and understanding the assumptions people make about me will help me to succeed.
Thanks to Carolyn, I’ve been inspired to stop and critically think about how others perceive me in the workforce, as a twenty-something woman. Check back soon, as I’ll explore this in more depth once I return to New Jersey.
Thanks for the advice, Carolyn!
